Second day of this challenge and I am more tired and sleepy than ever. It seems the dry atmosphere of airplanes is not good for congested noses and I feel like I could kill for the humid Bangkokian weather right now.
I landed at Helsinki airport an hour ago and tired and all, it had the same soothing effect on me than the first time. The snowed landscape, the white skies and the thick clouds were the introduction to this airport very full of really quiet people, a sight which feels unusual after spending more than a month in Spain.
But it is not only that. It is a feeling of moving in a space designed with comfort in mind. Light colors, beautifully designed fonts on food stores, comfy “Charge your mobile here” tables at restaurants, charging seats sponsored by companies on the gates waiting area. Free, fast, easy to access and fully operational wireless internet available.
I am lucky today. I maybe be sick but I am flying in Business Class. I get to the lounge, I marvel at the beautiful and peaceful Scandinavian design and I find a cool sleeping chair where I may manage to catch some sleep. As I lay down and close my eyes, looking at the frozen planes outside, I hear her behind me talking on her phone.
Loud, strident, dramatic, almost shouting.
I sight, and as I do, I wonder why I ever left Holland, London, even New York. I sometimes think I was born in the wrong place, for I cannot feel more embarrassed or far away from this her right now.
I know some people say places like Finland are cold, quiet and boring, devoid of the light and soul we enjoy in other places of the world. I have heard this about Holland, about Singapore, about many Scandinavian countries too.
But you know what? I do not agree. Quiet, organized, efficient is what does it for me.
Drama-free is comforting.
Quiet is sexy.
Efficient is hot.
And right now I feel I am back just right at my world.
